ALAMOGORDO, NM (KRQE) – Gov. Susana Martinez has confirmed an Alamogordo police officer has been killed in the line of duty.

This all happened early Friday morning on South Florida near the White Sands Trailer Park. Neighbors say they heard gunshots and then saw someone go down.

KRQE News 13 has learned the suspect is dead. The family says that the suspect was involved in a domestic dispute and when officers arrived, gunfire was exchanged. They say the suspect died of his injuries.

The office of Gov. Susana Martinez released the following the statement concerning the incident:

“I am again so very saddened to see that yet another courageous law enforcement officer has been killed in the line of duty. I ask all New Mexicans to keep this brave officer’s family and friends in their thoughts and prayers. The violence against our police officers has to end, and we must do everything we can to stand up for those who put their lives on the line every single day to protect us.” – Gov. Susana Martinez

The family of the suspect also said that the one thing they wanted to say is how sorry they are to the officer’s family.

A lot of people in the trailer park are shaken by what happened.

“Around here it’s always so quiet you never hear anything like that around here. We’ve been out here 16 to 17 years nothing like this has happened around here,” said Wayne Dubbs, resident.

A news conference is scheduled for 1:30 p.m. local time.
