Progress Ohio holds demonstration to have US Supreme Court seat filled

COLUMBUS (WCMH) —  Advocates here in Ohio have a message for senators in Washington D.C.

They want hearings to move forward to fill the vacant seat on the U.S. Supreme Court.

Members of Progress Ohio held a demonstration, dressed in judicial robes while standing around one empty chair.

It’s been more than 160 days since Judge Merrick Garland was nominated by the President; the longest any nominee has gone without a hearing.

Former Ohio Supreme Court Justice Herb Brown says those obstructing the process are violating the constitution. “These senators have written a personal amendment onto the Constitution. That amendment says something like, ‘A president cannot appoint in his last year of term in office.’ That’s not in the Constitution.”

Progress Ohio says without a ninth justice the court could be split on the challenge to Ohio’s “Golden Week”, the period in which Ohioans can both register to vote and cast an early ballot prior to the election.
