Vietnam veteran gets his diploma from Whitehall-Yearling High School

WHITEHALL, OH– A Vietnam veteran got a big surprise on Friday at Whitehall-Yearling High School.

Roy Leggett went into the Army his senior year of high school. Instead of accepting his diploma, he was in the midst of the Vietnam War.

Leggett eventually got his GED, but always wanted a diploma from his alma mater.

Principal Paul Smathers shocked Leggett at an alumni event with a real diploma.

“I couldn’t ask for anything better. I waited a long time for that. I’m happy,” he said. provides commenting to allow for constructive discussion on the stories we cover.
