Richard Shantery, 50, was pronounced dead at the scene. Police say he drove off the east side of the roadway and hit the guard rail.

Shantery was a Columbus Police officer from 1988-1999. Police say he resigned “in good standing” to look for a career in the private sector.

Olentangy River Road was blocked off for several hours southbound at Henderson Road, and northbound at Garrett Drive while police investigated. This is the city’s 45th traffic-related fatality of 2016. provides commenting to allow for constructive discussion on the stories we cover.
