Parents accused of nearly starving blind, autistic teenage son to death

LONGMONT, CO (WCMH) – Two parents in Colorado are accused of nearly starving their 17-year-old blind, autistic son to death.

KDVR reports Vanessa Hall and David Hall were arrested and face felony charges.

The teen weighed 88 pounds and was suffering from severe malnutrition. A team of doctors told police that they had never seen vitamin levels so low.

According to court documents, he was diagnosed with hypovolemic shock, a life-threatening condition where you lose more than 20% of your body’s fluid supply.

One doctor said the boy’s condition was ‘consistent with someone who would have been in a concentration camp for several years,’ KDVR reported.

Doctors told police the teen is legally blind and believed to be autistic.

The parents told police their son refused to consume anything but Cheese-Its, Cheetos and Doritos and up to eight sodas per day.

Police said they failed to get the appropriate help to make sure their son received the nutrients his body needed.

“If you have somebody in distress, use those resources. If you’re unsure of what the resources are and you have somebody in distress, by all means– contact the police department,” said Det. Sgt., Matthew Cage of the Longmont Police Department.

Doctors say it will take at least a month of intense medical treatment before the boy can be considered anything but life-threatening. I could take six more months for him to achieve an appropriate weight. provides commenting to allow for constructive discussion on the stories we cover.
