OSHP trooper struck and killed on I-90 near Cleveland

LAKEWOOD, OH (WCMH) — An Ohio State Highway Patrol trooper was struck and killed by a vehicle along Interstate 90 near Cleveland.

It happened shortly before 1pm Thursday afternoon in the westbound lanes of I-90 near McKinley Avenue while the trooper was outside of his car for a traffic stop.

According to the Ohio State Highway Patrol, Trooper Kenneth Velez was killed as a result of the crash.

“This is a tragedy for the Ohio State Highway Patrol and the Department of Public Safety,” said Colonel Paul Pride, Ohio State Highway Patrol Superintendent. “Our prayers go out to the Velez family during this difficult time.”

Trooper Velez, 48, graduated as a member of the 118th Academy class in November 1989. Trooper Velez is survived by his three children.

Ohio law requires drivers to slow down or move over for emergency vehicles stopped on the side of the road.
