TAMPA, FL (WFLA) — Hundreds turned out Wednesday night at Alonso High School for a candlelight vigil in memory of Jose Fernandez; however, at some point during the night, Fernandez’s original Alonso HS baseball jersey went missing.
The #16 jersey had been hanging in the dugout during the ceremony. As the coach and school leaders cleaned up after the vigil, the jersey was gone.
The school has filed a police report with the Hillsborough County Sheriff’s Office.
Coach Landy Faedo is pleading with whoever took the jersey, to return it.
A photo of the jersey was posted in the Alonso Ravens Baseball Club Facebook page, stating: “Please make your way back to us. No questions asked. It’s a Raven memory that’s part of our history as a team.”
The memorial came just three days after Fernandez’s untimely death. He and two others were killed as the boat they were in crashed into a jetty in the waters off Miami Beach early Sunday morning.
The Miami Marlins drafted Fernandez in 2011.
