SALEM, NH (WCMH) – A two-year-old girl is in the hospital with broken bones after being run over by her seven-year-old sister in their mother’s car.
It happened at a Salem, New Hampshire apartment Tuesday afternoon. WMUR reported.
“Apparently, the mother had given the 7-year-old keys to go outside and start her vehicle,” said Salem police Captain Joel Dolan. “In doing so, when the girl started the vehicle, she was also able to somehow manipulate it into gear. The vehicle went into reverse, backing over the 2-year-old, who had followed the 7-year-old outside.”
The child’s legs were run over by the car, causing broken bones and other injuries. The girl was taken by medical helicopter to a Boston area hospital with injuries described as non-life-threatening.
Police say they are still deciding whether to file charges against the mother. Police added that starting the car all along is something that children should never be allowed to do.
“They are inquisitive. It might be something that they ask their parents to do, but to let them go out there and do it unsupervised on a piece of equipment that is as heavy and as dangerous as a motor vehicle, it’s just not good common sense,” said Capt. Dolan.
