5-year-old gets the absence note of all absence notes

HAMPDEN TOWNSHIP, PA (WHP/WCMH) — A 5-year-old Pennsylvania boy received the absence note of all absence notes.

Ben Bernstein and his dad Luke decided that Ben was missing picture day at school for one very cool reason: Bruce Springsteen was having a book signing in town.

“I’ve seen him in concert 27 times,” Luke told WHP. “Not as many as some.” When Luke had the chance to take Ben to the book signing, he didn’t hesitate, but Ben would need an absence note for missing school.

“I thought maybe if we could get him to sign the note, it would be really cool. Something he can have and we can have,” Luke said. The one snag to this plan? The Boss didn’t have a pen!

“He said ‘But I don’t have a pen,’” Ben told WHP. “And Daddy gave him a pen and he signed it and he said ‘Anything for you, Ben.’”

The note read:

Dear Ben’s Teachers:

I understand that today is picture day at Harrisburg Academy. Unfortunately, Ben won’t be able to get his picture taken at school because he is getting his picture taken with me!

Please excuse my friend Ben… he’s hanging with ‘The Boss’!

After The Boss signed the note, he gave Ben a big hug, which was Ben’s favorite part.

“I gave him a hug and said ‘Happy birthday Boss,’ and he said let’s take a picture,” Ben gushed.

In Luke’s book, this was a day well-spent for his son.

“To be so kind to our son, I would just like to say thank you,” he said. “It was wonderful.”
