TEMPE, AZ (KPHO/KTVK/WCMH) — An Arizona woman is thankful to be alive after a restaurant worker stepped in to save her from a brutal beating.
Daed White told KPHO and KTVK that she was outside of the Cracker’s Café in Tempe in the middle of the day when a stranger asked to use her cellphone. She let him, but that’s when he attacked her.
“I wish he just asked me ‘Give me your purse’ or ‘I’m going to do something if you don’t give me your purse,’” White said. “I [would] tell him ‘Here, take my purse.’”
White suffered bruises and cuts so severe she needed stiches and staples. Police say it could’ve been much worse had the beating continued. Luckily an employee of Cracker’s Café saw the attack.
The worker was bussing tables and jumped into action.
“He ran out the front door because that’s where he caught the visual of it, ran out and just spring into action,” said café manager Doree Bentivenga. “I mean, we, everything was laid out… the tray the cups that he had thrown at this guy.”
Throwing those items at the attacker were enough to scare him away and possibly save White’s life. The attacker took off on foot with White’s purse. Police are working to find him and bring him to justice.
“There’s [sic] items of evidence that were collected so we’re hoping that those will turn up additional evidence and hopefully lead us to the suspect,” said Sgt. Josie Montenegro of the Tempe Police.
White’s family still has the cell phone, and the attacker apparently managed to make one call on it. They hope that one call will lead police to White’s attacker. For now, all they can do is wait and hope while White heals physically and emotionally.
“I feel like I’m just scared to open the door,” White said.
