Police: Brutal home invasion in Ohio leaves elderly woman dead

NILES, Ohio (WKBN) – An elderly woman is dead after a home invasion in Niles Thursday night.

Police were called about 10:30 p.m. to a house on Hiram Street and found the woman dead inside the home.

The husband of the victim, who was home at the time of the invasion, told neighbors the suspects ransacked the house, punched his wife, who then fell down a flight of stairs.

The suspects stole some items from the home and took off.

Weathersfield police assisted Niles officers by bringing in their K-9s to track the suspects but they couldn’t locate them.

“This area is very quiet. This is very unusual for any kind of activity  like this to take place here,” said Lieutenant Daniel Adkins, Jr, Niles Police Department. “We are still in the early stages of the investigation. We are trying to figure out what might have been the motivation to give us leads to where to start.”

Police are waiting until all family members are notified before the name of the victim is released.

Neighbor Darryl White is shocked and saddened at the brutality of the crime.

“I can’t even imagine spending your last evening watching TV and them something like that happening,” White said.

The Ohio Bureau of Criminal Investigation is on the scene with a 3-D camera that will help recreate the crime scene. The new technology with record a 360 degree image. Lt. Adkins says the camera will help speed up the investigation.

“Basically it does a 360 degree crime scene image to replace the old technology where we are taking numerous pictures and drawing it out by hand,” Adkins said.
