Austin Popeyes employees go on strike following months of no A/C

AUSTIN (KXAN) — Imagine working without air conditioning in the summer heat.

That’s exactly what employees at a Texas Popeyes Chicken say has been happening. Tuesday, they went on strike.

Employees of the Popeyes Chicken on Riverside Drive in Austin say they’ve been working all summer without air conditioning. One worker told KXAN that many have complained for months, but nothing has happened.

“Now that fall is approaching we have this fear that once the temperatures start cooling down they think we’ll forget about it and it will happen all over again next summer,” Reuben Alvarado said.

Another employee, Jeymi Hernandez Madrid, said, “May 25 was the first time they came and tried to fix the A/C. Each time they’d come it would work for a couple days and then it would be hot again.”

KXAN tried reaching out to the owner of the franchise, but reporters have not heard back. A shift leader told the station the owner has ordered a new unit that will be installed on Thursday. provides commenting to allow for constructive discussion on the stories we cover.
