Columbus SWAT rescue woman being held against her will at Motel 6

COLUMBUS (WCMH) — A woman in a wheelchair was held against her will at a Motel 6 tonight in North Columbus.

Officers say the woman, who is not being identified to protect her privacy, met a man online and agreed to meet in person.

They met at an undisclosed location before going to the Motel 6 on Olentangy River Road.

At some point, the man pulled out a gun and refused to let the woman leave.

A witness, who had come with the victim to meet the man, was able to flee and called 911.

Columbus Police responded to the motel just before midnight, Friday, and called for SWAT when the man did not immediately surrender himself.

After a brief standoff, the man, who has been identified as Chalachew B. Zewdu, of Reynoldsburg, surrendered himself peacefully.There were reportedly no shots fired.

The man has been taken into custody and is not currently cooperating with police. The situation is under investigation.
