Mom leaves baby at S.C. grocery store, returns home to Georgia

ANDERSON CO., SC (WCMH) – A other accidentally left her baby at a South Carolina grocery store and drove to another state before she realized the child was missing, the Anderson County Sheriff’s Office tells WSPA-TV.

Deputies found the baby was found in a shopping cart around 3:20pm Wednesday in the foyer of a Publix grocery store on Clemson Boulevard.

The baby is nine weeks old, according to Sheriff John Skipper. He says the infant girl is okay and is now back in the care of her mother.

Investigators determined from surveillance video and other sources that the mother did not leave her child intentionally. Deputies say the mom didn’t realize she left the small baby until she got home and called them immediately.

Both the mom and baby are from Georgia.

Deputies did contact the Department of Social Services during the investigation, but no charges will be filed. provides commenting to allow for constructive discussion on the stories we cover.
