Police identify female burglarly, arson suspect found dead in fire after standoff

COLUMBUS (WCMH) — Columbus Police and Columbus firefighters responded to a house fire and barricade situation on the city’s east side Monday night around 6 pm.

Columbus police said they responded to the scene after a reported burglary. A woman was reportedly running around inside the home with a tool bag and had possibly broken a window.

Police said the suspect lit a fire in the back of the house. As several police officers went after her, she ran back into the burning building.

Battalion Chief Steve Martin says that crews were battling a blaze on the 400 block of Taylor Avenue, where Columbus Police say a woman was barricaded inside the burning home.

Police say they found the woman, who has been identified as Devin K. Toles, 24, dead in a bathroom of the home.

There were no pets or other people inside the building, according to investigators.

Police continue to investigate, but said it appears Toles acted alone in the burglary and the arson fires.

Anyone with information on the incident can call the Columbus Division of Police Homicide Unit at 614-645-4730 or Central Ohio Crime Stoppers at 614-461-8477.
