Caretaker accused of stealing from disabled adults now in custody

COLUMBUS (WCMH) — A Columbus woman accused of stealing money from disabled adults was taken into custody by the Fairfield County Sheriff’s Office. Authorities say Mary Satterfield, a former caregiver, used her position as a service provider to victimize those in her care.

Satterfield, 44, also goes by the name of Mary Marcum.

Bank surveillance video shows Satterfield taking out money. Investigators believe it’s the same money used to defraud numerous disabled adults and their personal bank accounts without authorization.

“She would write checks to herself and she would also utilize other victims or people that lived in the home for her scheme,” said Rhonda Grizzell, property crime bureau commander for the Columbus Division of Police. “She would write a check for one person and another person and then put the money in the second victim’s account. She will proceed to write another check to herself.”

Satterfield provided service for Dungarvin, a national organization that provides services to those with intellectual and developmental disabilities across 13 states, including people right here in Central Ohio.

NBC4 for reached out to Dungarvin, and they released the following statement:

“Dungarvin has a long and successful history of providing quality based services to Ohioans in need of support. We are actively cooperating with an ongoing investigation by law enforcement.”

Grizzell says that those who think they may have been defrauded should check their bank accounts.

“If there are family members out there who have family members in these types of homes and feel that they may have been a victim, we encourage them to take a hard look at their checking account and look over their financial information,” said Grizzell.
