CHARLOTTESVILLE, VA (WCMH) — It’s a moment many girls dream about; becoming their school’s homecoming queen.
“Homecoming Friday was very exciting,” Naia Fairchild tells WVIR.
Naia’s earned the crowning moment Friday, after her school mates voted her homecoming queen.
“After the point of them getting ready to announce her name, she stood there with her hands together, like she was just praying for her name to be announced…and then it was!” said Naia’s mom Tierney Fairchild.
When the crown was placed on her head and the sash over her shoulder, Naia’s face was lit up with happiness.
“It’s hard for my husband and I to even imagine when we chose to continue our pregnancy knowing that we were going to have a baby with Down syndrome who had a major heart defect that in fact 18 years later, she would be the Homecoming Queen,” Tierney tells WVIR.
But her classmates say Naia earned the crown, because of her infectious spirit.
“A lot of students agree that she really exemplifies what we look to show off,” said Homecoming King Francis MacCall.
And Naia is taking her crown for granted. “I just want to say thank you for your votes. This has been a wonderful year.”
