Teen comes to the rescue after military dad misses cheerleader’s moment

SAN ANTONIO, TX (WCMH) — When the 9-year-old girl needed someone during a heartbreaking moment, a high school senior jumped in to help.

Addie Rodriguez tells KABB that she understands why her dad has to away for military training, but it still hurts. “I just felt really sad because I miss him a lot.”

But a moment on the Central Catholic High School field featuring Addie and senior Matthew Garcia is melting hearts across the country.

During one of her performances, the cheerleaders were to be lifted on their dads’ shoulders. “It was really heartbreaking to see your daughter standing out there being the only one without their father,” Addie’s mom Alexis Perry-Rodriguez says.

That’s when Matthew came to Addie’s rescue. He asked if she was OK, then picked her up and put her on his shoulders.

“And then I realized what he was doing. And my heart just melted. It was just the most beautiful thing,” Alexis tells KABB.

Addie’s dad is a hero for serving in the military, but at least for one day, Matthew was another hero in her eyes. “…I thought that was so nice especially because my dad’s serving for us,” Addie says.

But for Matthew, he’s just happy to help. “I’m glad I could help make her day.”
