Stu Tudor, Columbus firefighter struck by lightning in 2014, has died

COLUMBUS (WCMH) — Stu Tudor, a Columbus fire fighter who was struck by lightning at a Columbus Crew game in 2014, has died.

According to the Columbus Division of Fire, Tudor died early this morning as a result of an infection he developed recently. Columbus Fire said the infection is attributed to injuries he sustained after being struck by lighnting.

He was at a Columbus Crew game on June 28, 2014 when a storm rolled in. While he crossed the parking lot, he was hit by the bolt from the black, stormy sky.

The strike left him paralyzed and unable to talk. He was in a coma for weeks.

In June of 2015, Tudor was interviewed by NBC4 about his recovery.

“I feel fine, but I just want to walk,” said Tudor in 2015, sitting in a wheelchair outside the Hilliard nursing home where he lived after the lightning strike. “I want to move, I want to get up and move … I can’t move.”

“Life has not been the same, we forget what life used to be sometimes…before this happened,” Tudor’s girlfriend Lisa Watford said. “It was bad, it was the hardest year of our life.”

The fire department said there are plans for a memorial service to be held at the Columbus Professional Firefighters, Local 67, union hall, at 379 West Broad Street, Sunday October 23, 2016.  Doors will open at 2 p.m., the service will begin at 2:30 p.m.
