Mother’s mission to make son with Down syndrome a model goes viral

ATLANTA (WCMH) – The mother of a little boy with Down syndrome is trying to help change the face of beauty.

Meagan Richter Nash has been submitting photos of her son, Asher, to a modeling agency for use in campaigns for Oshkosh B’Gosh and other kids clothing campaigns.

After a recent submission, the casting agency replied and told her that they hadn’t ‘requested a special needs baby.”

Nash told WXIA she responded with, “Did they say they were not casting a baby with special needs?”

The agency replied, “No, they didn’t say anything.”

A post about what happened on the Facebook page ‘Kids with Down Syndrome’ has gone viral. As of 6:30pm Friday, it has been shared more than 115,000 times.

The post features photos taken by photographer Crystan Barbee. Barbee says she has offered Asher’s family free photos for the rest of his life.

“I never wanted her to sacrifice photos due to medical bills and all the other expenses a family with a special needs child endures,” Barbee said in a Facebook post.

According to WXIA, all of the attention Asher has been receiving could be paying off. The family has a meeting scheduled with Oshkosh on Tuesday. Asher’s mom tells the station she hopes Asher can help open the door for other children with disabilities in the modeling world.
