MILLERSPORT, OH (WCMH) — Two residents of Thornville were killed Tuesday morning in a pair of related crashes on SR 204 in northern Fairfield County.
According to the Ohio State Highway Patrol, a westbound pickup truck collided head-on with an eastbound van after the van went left of center. Moments later, the driver of the pickup, 51 year old Ronald Marcum got out of his vehicle and was struck by a third vehicle.
The driver of the van, 29 year old Christopher Clay, was extricated from his vehicle but died while being flown by helicopter to Grant Medical Center. A passenger in the van, 37 year old Travis Bennett of Columbus, also flown to Grant Medical Center and is in stable condition.
Marcum died while en route to Fairfield Medical Center. A passenger in the pickup, Darla Marcum, 52, was transported to Fairfield Medical Center in stable condition.
The driver of the third vehicle, Heather Gambrill, was also transported to Fairfield Medical Center in stable condition.
Millersport Fire Chief Bob Price was among the first to arrive at the scene and says visibility was hampered by early morning fog. Price says says this stretch of route 204 just east of Millersport, with its hills and winding curves, has produced a lot of accidents.
“When it’s dark and with sporadic fog that will pop up on that road, if you’re not familiar with it, it’s a dangerous road,” Price said.
