Officers give Halloween surprise to 11-year-old cancer patient

MADERA, CA (WCMH) — Like a lot of kids, 11-year-old Aidan Nelson wanted to be a police officer for Halloween. However, a cancer diagnosis made that goal much more difficult.

Aidan has lived in Valley Children’s Hospital for the last two months.

“He walked into the hospital and became paralyzed two days after we arrived,” Aidan’s mom Elisha Nelson told KMPH. “We learned he has a cancerous tumor on his neck that is terminal.”

The Fresno Police Department heard about Aidan and his dream Halloween costume and decided to make it happen. Officers presented Aidan with his very own Fresno Police uniform.

“He was shocked,” Elisha said. “He doesn’t like surprises too much, so he was a little nervous about what he was waiting for, but when he saw it, he was like ‘This is so cool!”

The officers say although Aidan just wanted to be a police officer for Halloween, he is now one of them for life.

“I’m just so overwhelmed,” Elisha said. “I’m just so thankful for all the people. I mean, I love my son, but to see other people love on him too… it’s just incredible.” provides commenting to allow for constructive discussion on the stories we cover.
