COLUMBUS (WCMH) — For trick-or-treat, the little boy decided he wanted to honor a fallen hero, Columbus Police SWAT Officer Steven Smith.

The Columbus Division of Police tweeted out a photo of first grader Ben Schirg dressed as Smith for Halloween.

According to police, Schirg wanted to dress as a SWAT officer as a way to honor Smith and because he wants to grow up to be a SWAT officer too.

Smith died after sustaining a gunshot wound with a suspect in a standoff on April 10 earlier this year.
