SUTTON, W.Va. (AP) – Authorities say a Braxton County man tied up his grandmother with shoelaces and stole her money and car because he wanted to buy cigarettes and go drink at a bar.

WCHS-TV reports West Virginia State Police say 29-year-old Doy Adrian Taylor III of Sutton was arrested on charges of kidnapping, armed robbery, petit and grand larceny.

A criminal complaint says Taylor tied shoelaces around his grandmother’s wrists and a power cord around her neck before dragging her into a bathroom, where he barricaded the door with household items.

Police say Taylor then took $59 from his grandmother’s purse before taking off in her car.

The woman, who suffered minor injuries, was able to get out of the bathroom and call 911.

It’s unclear if Taylor has an attorney.
