Man detained at Reno rally says he was holding ‘Republicans against Trump’ sign

RENO, NV (WCMH) — Republican presidential candidate Donald Trump was rushed off the stage in Reno on Saturday after a scuffle in front of the podium. The man who reportedly sparked the scare told his side of the story to reporters later that night.

A Secret Service official said someone in the crowd shouted “gun” during the commotion, and Trump was whisked off stage as agents jumped into the crowd to subdue the suspect. The man, who identified himself as Austyn Crites, was escorted out by police officers, Secret Service agents, and SWAT officers.

Officials say no weapon was found after a “thorough search.”

Crites told reporters was holding up a “Republicans against Trump” sign when the crowd turned against him.

“All of a sudden, because they couldn’t grab the sign, or whatever happened, bam, I get tackled by all these people who were just, like, kicking me and grabbing me in the crotch and just, just beating the crap out of me,” Crites told CNN affiliate KTNV. “And somebody yells something about a gun, and so that’s when things really got out of hand.”

A law enforcement official told CNN that no charges were filed against Crites.

Two men who were in the crowd told CNN they heard shouting about a gun, but they did not see any weapon.

Trump returned to the stage several minutes later to thunderous applause and thanked Secret Service agents for their quick response. provides commenting to allow for constructive discussion on the stories we cover.
