Arson investigators look into suspicious death in east Columbus

COLUMBUS (WCMH) — Officials said a person was found dead in an east Columbus apartment after reports of a fire.

Columbus firefighters responded to reports of a suspicious odor coming from an apartment in the 1400 block of Fair Avenue just after 8:30pm Monday. The smell was traced to a first floor apartment where a “slow, smoldering” mattress fire was discovered, according to Columbus Fire Battalion Chief Steve Martin.

Martin said a male was found dead in the building near the fire. The fire was quickly extinguished.

Officials have not determined a cause or origin of the fire, but investigators are looking into arson. Columbus Division of Police homicide detectives were also called out to investigate the cause of death, which has been called suspicious.
