Family receives 14 duplicate ballots

SANDY, UT (KSL) Mary Petty has been getting a lot of important pieces of mail lately. Many of them not even addressed to her.

She said in the last month she received 14 official mail-in voter ballots at her Sandy, Utah home.

“When we started getting them, we got them all at once basically,” Petty said. “On the one day, I had seven of them or eight of them.”

The only problem is that there are only four people living in her home.

“Of the four who live here, three of us got double ballots,” Petty said.

The other ballots were for people who had previously lived at the home.

Duplicate ballots are something the Salt Lake County Clerk’s Office was hoping to avoid.

“We don’t catch everything. We tried but you know they know they are only supposed to vote one ballot,” Salt Lake County Clerk Sherrie Swensen said.

On October 11th, mail-in ballots were sent out to all 510,000 registered voters in the county. As of Saturday, she said only 247,000 have been sent back.

“Not even at 50% yet and they are either waiting to drop them off or they’re thinking they are going to go to centers which is a real concern to me,” Swensen said. provides commenting to allow for constructive discussion on the stories we cover.
