Couple accused of holding adoptive son captive in basement

HELENA, AL (WAFF) An Alabama couple is facing child abuse and neglect charges after allegedly holding their adopted son captive in their home’s basement.

Investigators say the 14-year-old boy had been kept in the basement for nearly two years and weighed only 55 pounds when found.

Richard and Cynthia Kelly were charged on Monday with aggravated child abuse. They are each being held on $1 million bond.

WAFF reports the child remains hospitalized in critical condition.
