VIDEO: Grandma finally meets teen who she accidentally invited to Thanksgiving dinner

MESA, AZ (KNXV/WCMH) — A story that took the internet by storm has finally come full circle.

Earlier this month, Arizona grandmother Wanda Dench thought she was inviting her grandson to dinner, but was actually texting 17-year-old Jamal Hinton. Hinton pointed out that he was not Dench’s grandson, but asked if he could still have a plate at the table. In classic grandmother fashion, Dench said “Of course you can. That’s what grandmas do…feed everyone.”

The text mix-up went viral when Hinton shared the exchange on Twitter.

On Thanksgiving Day, Hinton arrived at Dench’s house for what may be the most anticipated Thanksgiving dinner ever. When Dench opened the door, a handshake quickly turned into a hug.

“She welcomed me into her house,” Hinton told KNXV. “That shows me how great of a person she is. That’s what I’m thankful for.”

For Dench, this small act isn’t just about realizing the power of social media. It’s a lesson in kindness and a message from a higher power.

“This wasn’t me, it’s from God above,” Dench said. “He’s just using us as his tools and vessels to bring a message to others.” provides commenting to allow for constructive discussion on the stories we cover.
