CHICAGO, IL (WBBM/WCMH) — A Chicago woman’s rant in the checkout line of a craft store has gone viral and inspired another shopper to start an online fundraiser to help the employee the shopper yelled at.
A video posted to YouTube shows an intense confrontation between a shopper at Michael’s and a cashier, after the cashier and her manager, both African American, reportedly asked another woman to purchase a larger shopping bag.
The woman in the video, who has not been identified at this time, told WBBN the cashier and the manager discriminated against her because she is white and voted for Donald Trump.
“I am making a report against you. You discriminated against me twice,” the woman says in the video. “Your job is to ring people up and tell them to have a nice day.”
Other parts of the confrontation are laced with racial overtones. The confrontation shocked Jessie Grady, another customer in the Michael’s store.
“The things she screamed at all those employees … nobody should be subject to that abuse,” Grady told WBBN. “I don’t know how she could have handled that better. She was so professional and never raised her voice with this woman, gave her multiple chances to complete [the] purchase, and she kept screaming and calling her names.”
Grady recorded the confrontation and posted it to YouTube. Since then, the video has gotten more than 150,000 views. Grady says that wasn’t her intent and felt that she could do more, so she started a GoFundMe campaign to raise enough money to purchase a $400 gift card.
“It’s up to $100 every five minutes,” Grady said. “It’s kind of overwhelming like, cause I didn’t think I did that much. I just did what I was supposed to do.”
The online campaign has raised more than $12,000 so far. Grady hopes that others learn from this incident.
“Just be kind to people,” she said.
Michael’s corporate told WBBN that the company does not tolerate discrimination against employees or customers and is investigating the incident.
