Blind horse develops bond with ‘guide camel’

WINSLOW, ME (WCMH) – An unlikely friendship was formed at a zoo in Maine.

Caesar, a camel at the Pony X-Press Zoo in Winslow, Maine is considered the zoo’s main attraction. He means a lot more to Dolly, a blind horse that has lived at the zoo on and off for the last ten years, WGME reported.

“This horse, this is her seeing eye camel,” said Ed Papsis. “She’s probably the only horse that has a seeing eye camel, she unfortunately has gone blind.”

Needing some company, the zoo originally tried pairing Caesar with alpacas. The camel proved to be too large to be around them.

So, they paired him with Dolly.

“We put the horse in here and she just kind of bonded with him and he bonded with her,” Papsis said. “It worked out because as she went blind, she relies on him and she’ll follow him around.”

Now, Papsis says that anytime they take Caesar somewhere, Dolly is always there waiting for him, and Caesar always runs back to her. provides commenting to allow for constructive discussion on the stories we cover.
