COLUMBUS (WCMH) – Shortly after returning from a trip to Budapest, Hungary, where he was crowned the wrestling world champion in his weight class, Logan Stieber got an unwelcome homecoming surprise.

The former OSU wrestler said his girlfriend picked him up at the airport Monday night and they went to dinner in the Short North, parking on West 2nd Avenue. When they came out from their meal, they found out the car window had been broken, and Stieber’s bag had been stolen.

“Punched a window, grabbed it and left,” Stieber said.

Inside the bag, Stieber said, were his passport, iPad, iPhone and iPad chargers and portable chargers, a wrestling belt and gold medal from Budapest and several other items.

Tom Ryan, the head wrestling coach at OSU, said Stieber is one of only four people on earth to win four national championships and a world championship in wrestling.

“It was a bummer that you come home, your first meal, you know, someone takes your stuff,” Ryan said.

Stieber said he was “pretty calm about it” because “there wasn’t much I could do about it now or right afterwards.”

On Tuesday afternoon, Stieber said someone called him, saying he had found Stieber’s bag with most of his things still inside.

“Just very happy, very lucky, fortunate that people found it,” Stieber said.

He told NBC4 the only things missing were his iPad and Beats headphones.

Columbus police said car break-ins like this one are common this time of year. They urge people to use caution.

“Slow down, think about what’s in your car,” said Sgt. Rich Weiner of the Columbus Division of Police. “If you can see it, somebody can take it, so just take it in with you or hide it.”

Columbus police are asking anyone with information about this case to give them a call.

By 11:34am on Tuesday, the bag and medal had been returned.
