WHITE SETTLEMENT, TX (WCMH) — A library cat in Texas has outlasted the politician who tried to check him out of his home.

City council member Elzie Clements led an effort to have Browser booted out of his home at the White Settlement Public Library this summer. The gray tabby cat has been the library mascot since 2010.

Clements lost his re-election bid this November. His final City Council meeting was Monday, according to CNN affiliate KRLD.

According to NBC Dallas-Fort Worth, the move against Browser came after officials denied permission to an employee who wanted to bring a puppy to work at City Hall. Part of Clements’ argument was that some people with pet allergies could not visit the library, according to the town newspaper.

Council originally voted to kick Browser out, but had to reconsider after a public outcry. In the end, Clements joined other Council members in voting 3-0 to reinstate him in July. provides commenting to allow for constructive discussion on the stories we cover.
