COLUMBUS (WCMH) — Hundreds of Columbus Crew fans gathered at City Hall on Sunday for a “Save the Crew” rally, after owner Anthony Precourt announced his intentions to move Major League Soccer’s first club to Texas.

Molly Thomas says the team has changed her life.

She sports a Crew SC tattoo on her arm and she’s even relocated from a job in Cincinnati here to Columbus to enjoy the Crew and fans who she considers family.

“I don’t want my family to be torn apart, because friends become family, and this is a family. Like the team, and the players we are all a part of this family,” she told NBC4’s Shawn Lanier.

Precourt, whose Precourt Sports Ventures has owned the Major League Soccer club since 2013, said Tuesday the team is no longer sustainable and will make the move unless a new, privately-financed stadium is built in downtown Columbus.

Precourt says the team needs more fan and financial support to compete in the growing league, and a move to a stadium in an urban center is the only way to accomplish that goal.

He says the team will stay in Columbus for 2018, but its future beyond that is unknown.
Precourt tweeted Thursday that he takes “full responsibility” for the situation.

Save the Crew organizer and superfan Morgan Hughes said he would tell Precourt that the team belongs to Columbus.

“I would tell him that he may own the Columbus Crew but it’s not his. It’s ours. It’s this city’s.”
