I would like to introduce you to TOXCO, Inc. We are a complete battery recycler, final destination. We are the 2nd permitted nickel cadmium recovery facility in the Western Hemisphere. Our facility in B.C. Canada is the only lithium primary battery recycling facility in the world (that we know of). We are in Lancaster, OH, our Parent companies are located in California. Kinsbursky Brothers Inc. is also a permitted battery breaker.

Please visit our website, www.toxco.com. Another good site for us is www.BigGreenBox.com.

…Friends of Big Walnut Creek has teamed up with the City of Columbus Department of Utilities to reach out to the community in an effort to make water conservation a utilities saving experience. Our rain-barrel installation demonstration on May 15th was packed with residents from everywhere. All but one person purchased a rain-barrel for themselves. You are welcome to join us on June 5, at 6pm, in Whitehall/Bexley at the Juodvalkis Residence on 134 Mayfair Blvd for our last rain-barrel workshop of the season.

If you can carry your purchases without a plastic bag, please do. If you think about it, it’s a little wasteful and silly to carry your gallon of milk in a plastic bag – it has its own handle!

Plastic bags are responsible for killing large numbers of wildlife each year. Plastic bags can kill again and again since it can take them anywhere from 20 to 1000 years to break down/decompose. Plastic bags can also clog drains and waterways.

If you can carry your purchases without a plastic bag, make a step toward green. It is a small step that actually will make a big difference.

Retailers should love it when you say no to a plastic bag –you’re saving them money!

There will be times when you need a plastic bag. RECYCLE your HDPE bags. These are the flimsy, grocery store kind (not the thicker kind you get at Target or Old Navy –those aren’t recyclable around here). Take out the receipts and take all the #2 plastic bags back to the grocery store on your next trip. That way they can’t get blown around in the trash pick-up and make trouble for our environment and they won’t take-up space in our landfills for a thousand years.

Please have a look at this website from the Australian Broadcasting Corporation (ABC) for some general information and links to more information: http://www.abc.net.au/science/features/bags/default.htm

A new golf course is under construction in the Polaris area that has been designed with concern for the environment. It’s called Little Bear Village and Golf Club and is located just north of Polaris Parkway off S. Old State Rd.

This new subdivision has over 400% more green space than neighboring communities and to date, close to 1,000 trees have been planted.

The most important feature is the newest generation of synthetic grass! Plastic grass that doesn’t need mowed or treated with chemicals. This protects wildlife and waterways from chemicals, and drastically reduces use of oil and gasoline.

There are a variety of other green features being planned, including solar panels on the clubhouse.

Simple...parked my truck (about 20 mpg), and now I ride my Harley 90% of the time (44 mpg).

I just returned from a 1450 mile trip on the motorcycle...at $3.29 per gallon (high-test 93 octane gasoline) I saved over $129.00.

There is a new certified green carpet and rug cleaning business in Central Ohio. It is a dry and environmentally safe method. It works great and stains don’t reappear later like they do with steam cleaning methods. It is more environmentally friendly because there is no need to keep a truck running during the entire cleaning process the way steam cleaners do. The Green Elements Carpet and Rug Care website is www.greenelements.net

Some groundbreaking work is being done at The Columbus Academy in Gahanna. We will be the first school in the state to begin composting a significant portion of our kitchen and cafeteria food waste using an on-site facility run by students. Our facility is different from similar projects because the academy is a registered Class II Composting facility capable of composting over 384 cubic feet of compost at any time.

Composting is really the next step in recycling for businesses and organizations of all sizes…

--Richard Bracken of The Columbus Academy
